Attack On Indian Parliament
13 December 2011. This date cannot be forgotten even if one wants to, because on this day there was a terrorist attack on the temple of democracy i.e. the Indian Parliament. No one had thought that someone could enter Parliament with a vehicle loaded with AK 57, handguns and grenades. As soon as they entered inside, the terrorists started carrying out their nefarious intentions. At this time, many big leaders and journalists including the country’s Home Minister Lal Krishna Advani, Pramod Mahajan were present in the House.
To spread panic, the attackers opened fire indiscriminately, resulting in the death of six Delhi Police personnel, two Parliament Security Service personnel and a gardener. However, later all five terrorists were killed by the security forces. Due to this terrorist attack at that time, an atmosphere of panic was created not only in the Parliament but also in the entire country. Who was the mastermind of this attack? After all, what was the motive of those terrorists behind entering the Parliament? Let us tell you in full detail what the scene was like on that dreadful day. The darkest day of democracy.
It was cold weather, but the atmosphere inside the Parliament was quite warm. The reason was the tremendous uproar between the opposition parties. Actually, the winter session was going on in the Parliament and the Women’s Reservation Bill was being discussed. Within a short time, this discussion turned into a huge uproar, due to which at around 11:00 the proceedings of both the houses were adjourned for 40 minutes. Therefore, many ministers including the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and prominent opposition leader Sonia Gandhi had left the Parliament.
There was a queue of white vehicles at gate number 12. Vice President Krishna Kant’s convoy was also about to leave. At around 11:30 the security guards of the Vice President were waiting for him to come out. But then something happens which no one had thought or imagined. A white Ambassador car drives inside the Indian Parliament taking VIP entry. Due to the red light and fake Home Ministry sticker on the vehicle, no one suspects that vehicle. But there were five terrorists in it, that too with weapons.
At that time the security guards were unarmed. Well, although many MPs of Parliament had left, at that time Home Minister Lal Krishna Advani was still present in the Lok Sabha along with many of his fellow ministers and about 200 MPs. As always, there was a large crowd of journalists in the Parliament. Here, the terrorists somehow managed to bring their vehicle inside by dodging the security guard, but as soon as they entered the Parliament House, they increased the speed of their vehicle.
Due to which the security personnel present there become suspicious. So some guards run behind the car and signal it to stop. In the chaos, the terrorists’ car collides with the Vice President’s car. This sudden collision creates a stir. Lok Sabha security personnel Jagdish Prasad Yadav is the first to arrive to stop these terrorists. He was unarmed. After the collision, five terrorists immediately come out of the vehicle and start firing indiscriminately.
Jagdish Prasad Yadav is killed while trying to stop the terrorists. All five terrorists were armed with seven guns and all of them had bags on their backs and shoulders. This was the first time that terror had come within the threshold of the temple of democracy. The entire Parliament House echoed with the sound of bullets. Most people considered the sound of bullets to be the noise of firecrackers. All the MPs and other people present inside the Parliament had no idea what was happening outside. They all were unaware of this.
But the security guards present outside immediately take up their positions. The maximum sound of bullets was coming from gate number 11 only. The five terrorists were still firing guns from around the Ambassador car. At the same time, an explosion is heard which makes it clear that the Parliament House has been attacked. Due to which the security personnel of Parliament House, Delhi Police and CRPF personnel move towards Gate No. 11 together. Now firing had started from both sides. Seeing the matter escalating, people present inside the Parliament were informed that the Parliament has been attacked. Everyone should be alert.
As soon as this news was heard, there was an atmosphere of chaos in the Parliament. In this atmosphere of terror, whoever found a place hid himself there. First of all, all the doors and windows going inside the house are closed. All senior ministers including Lal Krishna Advani and Defense Minister George Fernandes were immediately taken to a safe place inside the House. After this, the security personnel take up their respective positions inside the house. On the other hand, seeing the security personnel moving towards gate number 11, the five terrorists also start changing their positions.
One of those 5 terrorists opened fire and moved towards Gate No. 1, while the remaining four terrorists moved towards Gate No. 12. But the main doors here had already been closed. However, the way the terrorists were running here and there while firing bullets, it was clear that they had somehow entered the house but they did not know through which door to enter the house. The aim of these terrorists was to go to the main premises of the Parliament and take all the ministers and officials hostage and get some of their conditions fulfilled.
Well, as the attacker was moving towards gate number 12 and firing bullets, our soldiers and security personnel were also keeping an eye on him. CRPF constable Santosh Kumar displayed bravery and killed the terrorist on the spot. As soon as the bullet hits, the terrorist falls in the corridor near gate number one, some distance away from the door. But he was still breathing. Despite being completely targeted by the security personnel, they still did not go near him. They suspected that he might blow himself up with a bomb. And his doubt very soon turns into belief.
After falling on the ground, the terrorist was convinced that he would not be able to survive. There is no chance of survival so he presses the remote and detonates himself with the bomb. That terrorist had a bomb tied on his body but the danger was not over yet. There were still four more terrorists left who were like walking bombs. They created chaos in the Parliament by firing bullets indiscriminately. Looking at him it seemed that he could compete for many hours because he had come fully prepared. But our soldiers were also not behind.
He was fighting them with full bravery. Meanwhile, perhaps the remaining four terrorists had also received the news of the death of one of their comrades. Which he might have guessed from the explosion through which the terrorist had blown himself up. Therefore, the rest of the terrorists became more nervous and were running here and there to fulfill their purpose. By now NSG commandos and army had also received the news of this attack.
A special team of Delhi Police was sent to Parliament House to deal with the terrorists as soon as possible. However, live operation was still going on in the Parliament House. The media was also busy with its work. Through him the news of the attack had now spread across the country and abroad. There was an atmosphere of fear in the entire country. The public was very scared. The security personnel had now started surrounding the terrorists from all sides. Firing was continuing continuously from both sides. Then during this time gate number Good news comes from five and that was that our soldiers have killed another terrorist.
In this way two terrorists had now been killed. The three remaining terrorists knew very well that it was impossible for them to escape alive from here. Therefore he makes his last attempt. The three terrorists move towards Gate No. 9 while continuously firing bullets in their defence. According to a report, a terrorist had tried to climb the first floor of the Parliament with the help of Doordarshan cable, but the soldiers foiled his attempt by opening fire. Just then in anger he threw a grenade towards the police.
Then in retaliation our security forces were successful in killing two more terrorists. At last there was only one more terrorist left. He had come to know that all the ways to go inside the house were closed and there were no chances of his life being saved. Then that last fifth terrorist runs towards Gate No. 1. To cause maximum damage, he blew himself up with the bomb. Within a few moments, that terrorist was reduced to rags. Smoke and a strange smell had spread all around, seeing which everyone was shocked.
But the good news was that our security forces had killed all the five terrorists with a determined effort. But the security forces were still holding the front because they did not know how many terrorists there were in total. After waiting for a long time, there was no sound of firing from the front. Only then did he heave a sigh of relief. However, the operation to kill the terrorists was now over, but after the bullets, the sounds of ambulances started echoing in the Parliament. Five Delhi Police personnel, a woman security guard of CRPF, two Rajya Sabha employees and a gardener were killed in the firing that lasted for about 45 minutes.
18 people were confirmed injured in this attack, who were immediately taken to the hospital with the help of ambulance. On the other hand, every nook and corner of the entire Parliament was checked. After which all the leaders and officials present inside the Parliament are brought out. At the same time, a crowd of media persons and journalists gather outside the Parliament to cover such a big attack. All five terrorists were killed, but those who planned the Parliament attack were still alive.
The big question was who is the mastermind behind this attack? Well, it was clear from the bodies, clothes and evidence recovered from the terrorists that this was definitely a nefarious conspiracy of Pakistan. A big statement comes from the then Prime Minister condemning this terrorist attack on Parliament. Atal ji says that India will face terrorism firmly. Home Minister Lal Krishna Advani also said that India will not take this attack lightly.
He will give a befitting reply to the enemy. Due to this incident, tension had increased between India and Pakistan. The five terrorists killed in the Parliament attack were identified as Hamza Haider alias Tufail Rana, Ranvijay and Mohammad. Delhi Police was investigating this terrorist attack. Just two days after the attack, on 15 December 2001, Afzal Guru, the mastermind of the Parliament attack, was caught. Afzal Guru was a member of Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front i.e. JKLF and had received terrorist training from there.
Along with him, Afzal’s cousin Shaukat Hussain, Guru Shaukat, Guru’s wife Afsan Guru and Syed Abdul Rehman Gilani, professor of Arabic language at Delhi University, were also arrested. The phones and their car recovered from the five terrorists killed in the attack on Parliament helped in identifying the conspirators behind the attack. When the case reached the Supreme Court, SAR Geelani and Afsan Guru were acquitted due to lack of evidence, but Afzal Guru’s death sentence was upheld.
Shaukat Hussain’s death sentence is commuted and he is sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment. Afzal Guru was declared the mastermind of this attack and was sentenced to death on 20 October 2006, but his execution was stayed. The reason for this was that a few days before the hanging, Afzal Guru’s family came to New Delhi to meet President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and appealed to postpone the hanging.
There was a lot of anger across the country regarding Afzal Guru. At the same time, the family of CRPF jawan Kamlesh Kumari, who was martyred in the attack, had clearly said that if the President accepts the petition, they will return the Ashok Chakra. On December 13, 2006, the families of the deceased returned the medals to the government. On the other hand, till April 2007, the then President of India APJ Abdul Kalam had refused to interfere in the judicial process. After this, on February 3, 2013, the mercy petition filed against Afzal was rejected by the then President Pranab Mukherjee.
Finally, on February 9, 2013, at 08:00 am, Afzal Guru was hanged in Tihar Jail, Delhi. By giving death sentence to Afzal Guru, India had told the whole world that it is capable of giving a tough defeat to terrorism. We hope you liked this information.
Anyway, see you again with the powerful explanation of the History.
